Roof Tiles as Roman Shields

The Brief

Roof tile manufacturer Creaton came to us with an unusual creative concept: its tiles were to symbolise resilience equal to the legendary shields of a Roman legion. The idea needed visuals strong enough to carry it – a believable army preparing for battle, not a costume party.

Historical Authenticity on Set

The Photoshoot

We found a historical reenactment group specialising in faithful reproductions of the armour, weapons and appearance of a genuine Roman legion. Working with just five reenactors, we staged and photographed each figure and formation with the exact angles, light and poses needed for the final composition. Every helmet, shield and tunic was historically accurate, giving the campaign a credibility that props alone could never achieve.

Building a Legion in Post-Production

The Result

In post-production – long before the age of AI image generation – we multiplied those five reenactors into a full Roman legion preparing for battle on the sands of the North African desert. It was an exceptional piece of photographic craft and digital compositing, and the campaign was highly rated by both the client and the marketing community. It remains one of the defining projects in NEXT Design’s portfolio.
